When parents are navigating the process of finding ABA therapy for their child, it can at times feel lonely and overwhelming. What helps during those moments is when you find someone along that journey that says, “I know how you are feeling. I can help.” That warmth and connection is something that you’ll find throughout your experience with Acorn Health.
From the moment a caregiver calls Acorn Health to the exciting time when a learner graduates from ABA therapy, our team members are there every step of the way, providing guidance and support. Across the country, our diverse teams include professionals from various backgrounds, all committed to creating a comforting and informed experience for our families. Our employees take immense pride in their roles, knowing they positively impact individuals with autism, helping them achieve their goals.
This Employee Spotlight is particularly special as we feature Intake Coordinator Jessica Olsen, who was initially introduced to Acorn Health as a client. Jessica shares her personal experience as a mother seeking ABA therapy for her son, which ultimately inspired her to join Acorn Health. Although she works remotely, Jessica is based near our Tawas, MI location.
Let’s dive into some additional questions for Jessica to get to know her a little bit better!
Tell us about your experience as a parent who was researching ABA therapy for her son:
In 2018, when my son was around 2 years old, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Initially, we struggled to secure services for him due to private insurance hurdles. However, once we found Acorn Health, we finally started getting the support we needed.
Everyone we encountered was helpful and took the time to explain what to expect. As a parent, the initial process of finding services for your child can feel daunting and overwhelming, but this team truly made us feel supported. They guided us through every step.
Fast forward to today, my son recently turned seven and graduated from Acorn Health’s ABA therapy program in February 2023. His progress has been incredible. When he was little, we worried he might never speak, but now he talks your ear off and has the best can-do, free-spirited confidence.
When we started with ABA therapy,my main goal was that he could communicate, and I didn’t want him to struggle academically. I wanted him to have as normal of a life as possible. We are so proud of all he’s achieved, and he is why I’m here today serving other families in need of ABA therapy support.
Tell us about your role as Intake Coordinator Acorn Health.
I started my role in late 2023 as an Intake Coordinator, which is one of several roles that Acorn Health created to expedite access to ABA therapy services while providing ongoing support and guidance to families throughout the process.
I schedule intake assessments for all the centers in Michigan, informing parents about what to expect, how long each step takes, and reassuring them that progress is being made.
Having been through this myself, I empathize with parents who are anxious for information and answers. I understand their uncertainties and take pride in providing the reassurance they need.
I feel this role is where I am meant to be. My background includes working in medical settings and time spent as a stay-at-home mom. My experiences have all led me here, to a position where I can truly make a difference.I believe this is where I am meant to be and I hope to be here for a very long time.
What’s something you’d want parents to know about ABA therapy?
Once we found ABA therapy, we quickly saw its benefits. My son was in therapy every day, Monday through Friday, and it never felt like work for him. The therapists structured activities around his favorite play settings, making the experience enjoyable and engaging. The BCBAs brought toys he loved, ensuring sessions were fun, individualized, and age-appropriate. He enjoyed being at the center center and interacting with other kids.
I want parents to know that ABA therapy can be incredibly beneficial and enjoyable for children with ASD. It’s designed to be engaging and tailored to each child’s interests, making the learning process fun and effective.
How do the learners you work with everyday inspire you?
I’m inspired by the progress these families make and by the opportunity to support them through their journeys. Acorn Health has profoundly impacted my son’s life and mine. Now, I have the privilege of helping others experience the same positive change!
